The Glozhene Monastery "Saint Georgi" is one of the most interesting monasteries in the Stara Planina Mountains region. It is not hidden in the mountains but is standing on a high stone terrace, separated from the surroundings by steep rocks. The legend says that the village is founded by the Kiev's prince Glozh who has received this site from King Ivan Asen II. The prince has built a small fortress and a monastery. The monastery has existed until the arrival of the Turks or more likely until the period of converting the local people to the Muslim religion in XVII c. The monastery is rebuilt again at the beginning of XVIII c. The monks have built the monastery on a high hard-to-reach rocky terrace so as to escape from the Turkish invasions. The original church has been seriously damaged by two earthquakes from 1904 and 1913. The present-day church is built in 1931. The iconostasis of the old church has been moved to the new church. The monk dwellings are situated in a massive two-floor building from 1858 at the site of older dilapidated housing buildings. The monastery has a big educational activity at the end of XVIII and the beginning of XIX c. With the support and leadership of the monastery a school is established in the village of Malak Izvor. The monastery is well-known for its temple icon "Saint Georgi the Conqueror" which, according to the legend is brought by prince Glozh.
